Sleeping

The first few nights at home can be cause anxiety. Your baby is in new surroundings and may behave differently than when he was in hospital. Babies also seem to get their clocks back to front - they are awake at night and asleep in the day. To help overcome this try:

  • If your baby needs feeding or comforting, don't turn on the main light - use a night light or side light; avoid stimulating your baby with lots of talking, playing and rocking - these activities may waken your baby more than he already is.
  • There is no need to change a baby's nappy at every feed. During the night change the nappy with every second feeds.
  • Swaddling a baby often helps him settle but be careful not to overheat him.
