Teaching
The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh is a large teaching hospital which means
that parents will meet a variety of students as well as nurses, midwives and
doctors who have completed their basic training but are now taking specialist
courses in looking after sick or premature babies. To be effective teachers, staff may
use details from a parent’s or baby’s case records. In addition, these trainees
need clinical, that is to say 'hands on', experience. All students are
supervised closely on the neonatal unit and information is treated
confidentially. It is hoped that parents are comfortable with this and do not
object. If there are concerns, parents should let the staff know.
