Communication

At all times of the day and night there is a nurse, two junior doctors and a consultant responsible for looking after your baby. If, as a parent, want to meet with a consultant you need to tell the nurse looking after your baby and she will arrange for this to happen.

For the most part the consultant in charge of a baby's care will be able to speak to parents on the same day as requested; but certainly no later than the next day. In cases of emergency or where a baby is very ill, then a consultant will usually be available immediately. Parents may notice that on the sticky labels used to identify paperwork or specimens relating to a baby, the name of a consultant appears. This is the consultant who was responsible for your baby when he/she was born. However this is not the only consultant who will see your baby. There are 7 consultants responsible for the care and treatment of the babies admitted to the neonatal unit. The consultant that parents see, if they have concerns or questions about their baby, will be the one who is attending their baby at that time.
