How will the BabyLink Project help?
In general, parents want more information about their baby's
condition, investigations and treatments. Staff do their best to speak with parents
in advance about bigger decisions so that they are able to be involved in
decision making. 'Bigger decisions' refers to when there are significant risks
to a baby that may result from a decision. Significant risks means dangers that
are not rare. Parents may be asked to sign a consent form for some major
treatments once they have been explained to them. In an emergency, if a
decision has to be made that will help protect the life or health of a baby,
and there isn't time to speak to parents, staff will make the best decision
that they can, guided by what they already know about parents' views.
BabyLink will give parents access to their baby's clinical record on the
computer. The information available through this project should help parents to
understand more about the treatments and procedures that their baby needs and
receives. If parents have additional questions, they need to ask them. The
information on the BabyLink pages has been carefully written and edited by a
few people. This will help reduce the amount of conflicting information that
parents might receive.
