Personalising the cot/incubator

The equipment used in helping and monitoring a baby can make personalising his space difficult but even so, it is important to try and make it homely. Staff and volunteers have made soft, colourful bedding for the cots and incubators and parents may, if they wish, choose their baby's linen. Also, if parents have any small soft toys, these can be placed in their baby's cot or incubator. Parents may also want to add photos of themselves or family. If baby has brothers and sisters, it is important that they to feel included. They can draw pictures that the nurses will to stick to the cot or incubator or surrounding space.

Not all babies are well enough to wear clothes but as soon as they are, parents can choose clothes from the selection that is provided or bring in baby's own. A laundry bag and a notice telling that the clothes are baby's own will be placed on the cot or incubator. The nurses will put dirty clothes into the bag for parents to take home to wash. Sometimes mistakes happen and a baby's own clothes may be put into the unit laundry - attempts are made to find lost clothing but, unfortunately, these are not always successful. The unit takes no responsibility for lost clothing, shawls or toys.
