Monitoring baby's progress

Machines display vital information on:

  • heart rate,
  • breathing rate,
  • oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood (important in assessing how well the baby is breathing),
  • oxygen saturation,
  • blood pressure and
  • temperature.

Often all this information is displayed on one machine, referred to as a monitor.

Computer monitoring

In Edinburgh there are computers at each of the intensive care cots. These are used to store and display the information that is being collected by the monitors. This gives the staff very useful information on how your baby is doing.
