Treating jaundice

Jaundice is a condition in which a baby's skin and the whites of their eyes appear yellow. To treat jaundice we lay the baby under a blue light (this is called phototherapy). When babies require phototherapy they are nursed naked to expose as much of the skin as possible to the light. When under the light, baby's eyes are protected using eye-pads or an orange head shield.

Although the baby looks like he is sun bathing, phototherapy is not ultraviolet light and so is not harmful to the skin.
